The HisGIS 1832 Project: Digitising, Vectorising, and Modelling the Napoleonic Cadastral Maps and Tables for the Netherlands (and Beyond?)

HisGIS.nl provides a national digital infrastructure for research, policy development, and the creation and promotion of interest in the historic landscape and related built environment of the Netherlands. The project is based on the digitised and vectorised maps and tables of the oldest, so-called Napoleonic cadastre from around 1832, which was introduced in large parts of Europe following French instructions.

The project originated at the Fryske Akademy under the direction of prof.dr. Hans Mol and has been part of the KNAW Humanities Cluster since 2019. The current project leaders are Rombert Stapel (IISH) and Thomas Vermaut (KNAW HuC / Digital Infrastructure). In 2023 and 2024, a substantial grant from the Rijksdienst voor Cultureel Erfgoed and the Ministry of Education made it possible to transform HisGIS, which had grown over the years from various merged regional sub-projects, into a truly national digital infrastructure project: https://iisg.amsterdam/en/blog/hisgis-1832-project.
